Projects 2002 - 2004
Shadow Councillors base their projects on the views of the voters and results from the comment cards. Here is a taste of the projects the 2002-2004 Shadow Councillors and Delegates have been working on.
Transport
The transport group of Fermanagh Shadow Youth Council are continuing to campaign for the provision of bus shelters in the County after securing the facility at Derrychara Link Road.
The group recently met with representatives from Fermanagh District Council, the Roads Service and the Western Education and Library Board to discuss facilities at Quay Lane and the Irvinestown Road. If you get your bus at either of these locations let us know so we can use this as evidence to support our campaign.
We have been doing some research into how many of you get your buses in this area and will be continuing this project over the summer months.
The group also want to hear from WELB (yellow) bus users with their comments on their bus service and specific details of complaints. If you have anything to say on this matter please talk to your Shadow Councillor, e-mail info@fsyc.net or contact the office on 028 6634 3946.
The group also wrote to taxi firms asking if they would be willing to provide student discounts. County Cabs contacted the office offering 10% discount to students (see discount section).
Student Rights
This group are interested in investigating conditions in school toilets, for example is adequate toilet paper and soap provided, are toilets hygienic etc.
We are also interested in finding out if you have any complaints about student’s treatment in shops and the shopping centre after a query we received in the office. If you have a comments to make, talk to your Shadow Councillor or e-mail info@fsyc.net
Environment
This group have launched a poster campaign in primary and post-primary schools and colleges thanks to funding from Fermanagh District Council and the Council’s Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.
The poster campaign is based on litter, blue bins and recycling and you should have received details in school (probably via the Art department). There are two categories – one for primary school students and one for post-primary students. The winning posters will be printed professionally and distributed around schools. The school with the winning entry will also receive vouchers for Edco, which will be presented at a small function in the new school term.
The environment group also investigated the facility of bins in the county and wrote to Technical Services in Fermanagh District Council highlighting specific areas with a lack of litter bins.
Clarification has been received from Technical Services that this matter has been investigated and that some new bins have been erected starting from March 2004.
Discounts
The discount group continue to campaign with local shops and businesses for discounts for students. We hope you have made good use of the vouchers and offers previously printed in our newsletter.
You will find more great discounts and offers in the discount section of this newsletter. If you are interested in a USIT Scholar card which can be used to obtain discounts in stores such as Topshop, Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Game, DV8 etc, FSYC office have the relevant application form or downloaded from USIT website at www.usit.ie.
Did you fill in the survey about the cinema in the Spring newsletter? If you did, Thanks, if not, why not? If you still have a copy, fill it in and post it to the office or give it to a Shadow Councillor. If you would like a further copy, contact the office (contact details on back page)or speak to a Shadow Councillor.
The discount group will be summarizing the results of the survey over the summer months and will be presenting the findings to the cinema manager. Hopefully this will lead to securing some sort of discount for the cinema for students. For current discounts, click here for discounts.
Entertainment
Fermanagh Shado w Youth Council hosted ‘Bash on the Broad’, an interschool variety concert in the Lakeland Forum, Enniskillen. The event was organised by the entertainment project group in response to the comment cards seeking entertainment for young people, interschool opportunities and more cross community interaction.
Nine schools participated in the event with a variety of music, dance and drama. There were approximately 500 people present at the event and they really showed their appreciation for all the acts, clapping, cheering, singing along and stamping their feet.
The event was a huge success and the Shadow Councillors and Delegates were relieved that all their hard work had paid off. A lot of organisation had gone into booking the venue, lighting, sound, staging, insurance, publicity and distributing tickets.
Mental Health
The Mental Health Project Group organised a conference entitled ‘Mind: Your Business’ in the Ashberry Hotel, Enniskillen on Wednesday 21 April from 10 am to 2.45 pm. The conference aimed to increase awareness and dispel myths surrounding mental health and young people.
The format of the conference included a presentation by ZEST who work with young people who self-harm and a number of workshops run by; Aware Defeat Depression, Aisling Centre Counselling Service, NSPCC, Nexus, Westcare (Suicide) and Women’s Aid. The Cypher Dance Group provided entertainment by using dance to display the effects of drugs, racism and gang violence.
Approximately eighty people attended the event and evaluation forms showed that the day proved to be informative and useful, not only to the young people but also to the organisations hosting the workshops. In addition to this, each school received a resource pack containing information on many organisations that both teachers and pupils can use for reference.
Thanks go to the Western Health and Social Services Board who provided funding and Enniskillen Junior Circus for their donation which made the event and the resource pack possible.
