Elections
Elections are held every two years and mirror the process of District Council elections.
FSYC will be having elections in November 2006 to find the new Shadow Councillors for the next two years
Mission Statement
Fermanagh Shadow Youth Council exists to support and develop youth voice and build democratic competence by enabling young people to engage in youth led, community beneficial actions as acts of citizenship.
Aims of FSYC
To develop capacity for participation in the democratic decision making process;
Provide a forum for young people to raise matters that concern them;
Enable young people to proactively contribute to the shaping of policy and decisions that affect them;
To promote positive community relations through active citizenship, personal development and learning;
What does the Shadow Council do?
FSYC designs and promotes projects in response to issues raised by voters (see projects). The Shadow Council is also available for consultation with organisations seeking the views of young people.
What is a Shadow Councillor?
A Shadow Councillor is a young person elected by their peers to represent the post-primary student body in Co Fermanagh. They are elected according to manifesto issues, not political parties. Shadow Councillors undertake projects according to the views of their peers, participate in consultations and have the opportunity to receive training to assist them in their work as Shadow Councillors.
What is a Delegate?
Delegates are people nominated by Shadow Councillors to help them in their work. They may have particular experience, enthusiasm or expertise needed by the Shadow Council. Many are candidates who stood for election.
What adult are involved?
The Shadow Council nominates a management committee of a diverse representation of young people and adults. The management committee have a supportive role within the shadow council, ensuring that it is run safely, fairly and financially responsibly. It also deals with any complaints made in relation to the Shadow Council.
The Project Worker provides day-to-day adult accountability for all the Shadow Council’s activities, helping with office hours research that young people may have difficulty doing because they are at school, college or work. He/she and the part time admin assistant also help with communication within the Shadow Council and with outside organisations.
How can I get involved?
We are already starting to plan the elections in November and correspondence will be circulated throughout the schools and colleges, particularly from September onwards. If you are interested in going up for election talk to the current and past Shadow Councillors, your staff representative within school/college and think about the issues you would like to work on and your reasons for getting involved.
Perhaps you could work as campaign manager for a friend who is going up for election by helping them prepare their manifestos and promoting them within school/college and to people from other schools/colleges.
You may be really interested in a certain project that FSYC have been involved in and would like to act as a Delegate. Of course we want all students in Co Fermanagh to have their say and to help shape the Shadow Council projects so make sure you fill in the comment card when they arrive in school and approach your Shadow Councillor if you have a particular issue/concern.
The really important bit!
As a Shadow Councillor or Delegate you will have the opportunity to work with young people from all the schools in Fermanagh and to make new friends. In addition to this we carry out much of our training on residential weekends which are always great fun.
